Lotus Professional® reduces waste by reusing used beverage packaging …
The Green by Design Initiative, launched in Europe by Lotus Professional®, is Georgia-Pacific’s commitment to create long term value while taking care of the environmental dimension of Sustainability. This initiative focuses on our activities around Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (the 3 Rs).
Lotus Professional is committed to using resources wisely and our product portfolio reflects this commitment: 80 percent of our Away From Home paper production is made from recycled fibres. Lotus Professional recycled towel, tissue, napkin and wiper products retain high performance value, softness and brightness, while reducing the volume of waste paper that would otherwise go into landfills or for incineration.
Since 2006, we have been working on reusing used beverage packaging …
As part of the Green by Design initiative, and the 3Rs, Georgia-Pacific Hondouville works with local communities to collect used beverage carton packaging. Thanks to our innovative process we are among the first to give a second life to used beverage carton boxes.
Cellulose fibres from used beverage carton packaging are extracted and integrated into our pulp production for recycled products. But post-consumer waste recovery does not stop here… As well as being among the first to develop this technology, we are now preparing to even reduce associated waste.
Beverage carton packaging is mainly made of Cellulose fibres. Components such as Polyethylene and Aluminium are also used to ensure that the beverage is well preserved. A significant portion of this associated waste is already recycled and used by the industry. Our goal is to close the loop by reusing the entire used beverage carton package, so further reducing the volume of waste that would go into landfills.
Pierre Pelekhine, sustainability director for Lotus Professional® said: "We are continuously looking to find innovative ways to limit waste from the papermaking process. This innovation is in line with our vision of a sustainable world. Today, 75% of beverage carton packaging is made of cellulose fibres. Reusing post-consumer waste is a perfect example of a practical application of our Green by Design initiative ".
